Things to do BEFORE Your Pet is LOST

  1. Check Restraints and Barriers  –  Inspect and repair or replace collars, leashes, harnesses, doors, gates, gate latches and fences to help ensure the containment, restraint and safety of your pet.    DO THIS TODAY (and monthly thereafter) BEFORE AN ACCIDENTIAL ESCAPE OCCURS.
  2. Take Current Photographs  –  Have on hand CURRENT photographs of your pet(s) which you would need immediately in mounting a search for your pet.  Photos should include full-body, side and front views taken at the pet’s level to show distinguishing markings and color.  Also include a photograph of your pet with yourself to help prove ownership once your pet is found, should it be needed.
  3. Know Where Your Pet’s Vital Records Are -  During the stressful time of a lost pet, you will likely need quick access to vet info, medical records, microchip registration and proof-of-ownership (adoption agreement, bill of sale, rabies vaccination, etc.). Put copies on your phone, so you will have them if traveling.
  4. Tag Your Pets -  Ensure all information (such as name, phone number, address, etc.) on collar tags is current and the tags are in good condition.  You might consider using a tag providing your pet’s microchip number and the contact information for the pet registry used (see example photo). Having the microchip information on the tag will allow anyone who finds your pet (neighbor, police, etc., not just vets, rescues, shelters with scanners) to call the registry. Reputable pet registries will be available 24/7, will protect your personal contact info, and will begin immediately trying to contact you to tell you where your pet is located.
  5. Make Sure Your Pet Is Protected by a Microchip ID –  IF YOUR PET IS NOT CHIPPED, PLEASE DO SO IMMEDIATELY THROUGH YOUR VET. Studies show that found pets are much more likely to be returned home if they are chipped and registered (for example, dogs – 2.4x; cats – 21.4x).  One in three pets will be lost in their lifetimes.

HOWEVER, MICROCHIPS ARE MUCH LESS EFFECTIVE IN THE RETURN OF YOUR PET,

IF THE YOUR REGISTERED CONTACT INFORMATION IS NOT CURRENT , WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU MOVED OR CHANGED YOUR PHONE NUMBER OR EMAIL ADDRESS?

DID YOU UPDATE YOUR PET’S MICROCHIP CONTACT INFORMATION AT THAT TIME?
